“The true painting does not reveal the art, even less something aesthetic, its a way to be”
Shí Tāo 石涛 (Chinese poet and painter, 1642-1707)
About the artist
Based in the vibrant cultural landscape of Taipei, Matheus Almeida is a self-taught Brazilian artist whose practice is deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy and Asian aesthetic traditions. His work explores the intersection between resilience and the human spirit, utilizing raw linen and cotton paper as primary canvases.
Almeida’s visual language is heavily informed by the Xiěyì (写意) technique—a gestural, 'freehand' approach to painting. Embracing the spirit of contemporary Asian ink art, he prioritizes vivid, soulful expression over rigid detail. His style is characterized as semi-abstract, where deliberate brushstrokes suggest form and movement, inviting the viewer to engage with the essence of the subject rather than its literal representation.
